My name is Krisanne Mathias, and I am a 10-year-old Grade 4 student at the Canadian International School, Bangalore.
While I was getting ready for school recently, I realized how lucky I am to have a sturdy desk, a backpack, and comfortable shoes.
I was shocked to learn that that many students from low-income homes in rural Karnataka, who go to school (mainly govt schools), "back-to-school" looks very different. Many kids my age spend their entire school day sitting on hard, cold floors and walking long distances without proper footwear.
Why this matters to me: Sitting on the floor for hours isn't just uncomfortable—it’s harmful. It leads to poor posture and also has an indirect impact on their eyesight and their ability to concentrate and study. Without shoes, these students are also at risk of foot-related health issues that can keep them out of the classroom entirely.
My endeavor is to help in providing Back-to-School Kits to children from low-income homes in rural Karnataka for just INR 950. These kits are special because they are eco-friendly and life-changing. Each one includes:
• A Recycled Study Mat: So no child has to sit on the floor.
• Recycled Footwear: To protect their feet on the way to school.
• A Recycled School Bag: To keep their books safe and organized.
