My name is Leoma Mahto. I am 12 years old and a Grade eight student at Modern School, Faridabad.

I have undertaken this campaign because I was surprised to learn that many students from low-income homes in Haryana, who go to school (mainly govt schools) do not have basic school gear like proper footwear or a school bag and often sit on the hard ground to study at school.

I believe that the lack of proper study materials for children in government schools/schools run by NGOs is a pressing issue that needs to be addressed urgently. Unfortunately, many children are forced to sit on the floor due to the lack of proper infrastructure and resources. Lack of footwear leads to foot-related diseases and health issues. Education is the foundation for a bright future, and every child deserves access to quality education. However, the absence of essential materials such as desks, chairs, carpets, textbooks, and stationery hampers the learning experience of these children. Sitting on the floor not only affects their physical comfort but also their concentration and overall learning potential. Sitting down on the floor for longer periods leads to posture-related problems. Due to the scarcity of basic needs of study, their morals are down. It also has an indirect impact on their eyesight. Investing in education means investing in the future of our society. By addressing this issue, we can empower children with the necessary tools and resources to excel in their studies and pursue their dreams.

The back-to-school kit costs just INR 900 and gives students a pair of recycled footwear, a recycled study mat to sit comfortably at school or home and a recycled school bag for books. This is a very small amount to impact a student. Each kit costs just INR 900 including the cost of distribution.
