THE PROBLEM:

The streets of Mumbai are a kaleidoscope of sights and sounds, but for thousands of street dogs, they are also a place of constant struggle. Overpopulation, disease, and the endless search for food and safety are daily realities for these animals.

ABOUT ME AND THIS CAMPAIGN:

My name is Vara Oberoi, and I'm running this campaign, alongside my fellow Grade 10 students Aman Aggarwal and Samaira Popli, from B.D. Somani International School, Mumbai.

The urgent issue of street dog overpopulation is something we've seen firsthand. Recently, the city has faced challenges related to the large number of street dogs, which affects both the dogs’ well-being and the community. My friends and I were also deeply moved by recent events in Delhi, where rising dog-bite cases and debates over how to handle the street dog population made national headlines. 

This showed us that if cities don’t act quickly with humane solutions like sterilisation and vaccination, the problem can grow out of control. We believe that through sterilisation and vaccination, we can proactively create a healthier and safer environment for both humans and animals, a humane approach that is far better than waiting for a crisis.

THE INITIATIVE:

We know we can't solve this problem alone. That's why we've partnered with the Welfare of Stray Dogs (WSD), an incredible organisation that has been a beacon of hope for Mumbai's street dogs since 1985. WSD is a pioneer in the humane and scientific management of the street dog population. They are dedicated to sterilisation, vaccination, and rescue operations, working in areas like Parel and South Mumbai to make a real difference where it's needed most.

While WSD's kennels can house hundreds of dogs, its field programmes have a much wider reach, supporting thousands more on the streets with on-site treatment, feeding, vaccination, and sterilisation.

Each year, WSD's programmes make a profound impact on tens of thousands of street dogs across Mumbai, which includes:

• Large-scale sterilisation drives.
• Widespread vaccination campaigns to control rabies.
• On-site medical care for animals in need.

The funds from this campaign will be allocated to street dogs in Mumbai that are part of WSD’s sterilisation and vaccination programs, not just those in kennels. This ensures that a much larger population of street dogs directly benefits from the funds.

ABOUT WELFARE OF STRAY DOGS (WSD):

The Welfare of Stray Dogs (WSD) is a non-profit organisation that has been dedicated to the humane management and welfare of Mumbai's street dogs since its inception in 1985. The trust's mission is centered on controlling the stray dog population and eradicating rabies through scientific and compassionate methods. 

WSD achieves this through its core programs, which include large-scale sterilisation and vaccination drives, an on-site first-aid program for sick and injured animals, and an adoption program that advocates for the principle of "adopt, don't shop." Having successfully convinced the local municipal corporation to end the mass culling of stray dogs, the organisation's work is focused on creating a safer and healthier environment for both the animals and the human community.
