THE BACKDROP:

Over 61.43% of the Karnataka population lives in rural areas. 64.4% of the children in rural areas attend Govt schools.

Students who study at government schools in Karnataka, particularly in rural and remote areas, face significant challenges in accessing quality education. The scarcity of experienced teachers in these regions creates a HUGE gap in quality teaching, hindering the understanding of fundamental concepts. 

As a result, students often struggle academically, leading to poor performance and limited future opportunities. This disparity not only affects individual students but also puts the family in a cycle of poverty. There is an urgent need for targeted interventions to bridge this gap and ensure equal access to quality education for all.

THE INITIATIVE AND THE SOLUTION:

SANKALP LEARNING is an organisation based out of Bengaluru that devised a unique solution to solve this problem at scale. They have built a model where they provide online classes in Mathematics and Science to students of Grades 8-12 over Zoom and Youtube. Each class is for 60-minutes, and this is done for 300 hours in a year. In case students have questions, teachers from their respective schools help them. SANKALP has tied up with the Karnataka Government and, over the last 5 years, has grown the program.  This initiative is done in partnership with the Rotary Club Of Bangalore Spandana. 

Currently this initiative reaches out and impacts a massive 1.87 Lakh students across 27 districts of Karnataka. This is done with a team of approximately 40 teachers.

The team at Sankalp does not charge the government anything, and it is also free for the students. The cost to execute this program over the year works out to INR 60 lakhs and this is to reach out to 5 lakh students. This is a very low-cost program considering the scale of the initiative.

For the 5 lakh students plan the INR 60 L cost works out to an unbelievably low cost of just INR 12.5 per student. This includes 300 classes of 1 hr each in a year. These classes are a huge boon for these students as they now have access to top teachers, and this helps them score better in exams. This is a unique initiative that complements the governments school education program.

IT COSTS JUST INR 12.50 TO SUPPORT A STUDENT FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR. 

This crowdfunding campaign is to support the education of these children. So funding INR 12500, for example, impacts 1000 children for an entire year, INR 5000 impacts 400 students, INR 2500 impacts 200 students etc. Since this campaign is done with the Rotary Club of Bangalore Spandana - this also has TAX BENEFITS.

This is a very, very unique low-cost, high-impact solution that is slowly and surely transforming the education of students across Govt schools in Karnataka.

ABOUT ME:

My name is VEDANTH ASWIN. I am 14-years old and a Grade 9 student at DPS Bangalore North.

It is very disheartening to learn that students in government schools across Karnataka face significant barriers to quality education due to a shortage of experienced teachers especially in rural areas. This leads to poor academic performance and limits their opportunities.

I was thrilled to learn about the unique and innovative teaching model that Sankalp Learning has created. It bridges this gap through e-learning. Currently, Mathematics and Science are taught to students of Grades 8-12 through Zoom and their YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@Sankalplearningsolutions).

Each teacher at SANKALP teaches students from 40 schools at the same time. 1.87 lakh students benefit every day in Karnataka and now there is a need to scale this upto 5 lakh students. The SANKALP model provides access to top teachers and improves the quality of education, resulting in better pass percentages and exam scores. Students attend 300 classes in a year and this helps them to get a clearer understanding of the concepts. It costs just INR 12.50 to provide this unique e-learning classes to a student for a whole year. If you fund INR 2500, you support 200 students for an entire year.

In 2021, Prasanna Karthikeya (the Founder of SANKALP LEARNING) embarked on a journey to transform rural education by founding Sankalp Learning. His mission was simple yet bold: “Quality education should never be a privilege based on fees.” What began with just 4 teachers in 4 villages has today evolved into a large-scale movement spanning 1.87 Lakh students across 27 districts from Class 8 to Class 12 across Karnataka.

ABOUT ROTARY CLUB OF BANGALORE SPANDANA :

The Rotary Club of Bangalore Spandana works closely with SANKALP LEARNING and has supported them through their journey. Based out of Bengaluru, it was formed in August 2014 and is part of Rotary District 3191. The members are from diverse communities and regions. The club is engaged in various community service projects, which include projects around education, health, infrastructure, and water conservation. It's a model Rotary Club, and works with different partners. The club meets every Friday at 7:00 PM at the J P Nagar Cultural Association.
