THE BACKGROUND AND THE PROBLEM:
Kalahandi district, located in the South Western region of Odisha, is known for its rich tribal culture. However, despite its cultural wealth, the region has faced significant challenges, including poverty and a lack of access to basic education, particularly for young children. This situation is exacerbated by the inaccessibility of Anganwadi centers in tribal hamlets, making young children in this community especially vulnerable.
The Anganwadi system is a crucial component of the Indian government's efforts to provide early childhood care, education, and nutrition support to children and mothers in marginalized communities. However, in remote tribal hamlets, these centers may not be readily available or adequately equipped to cater to the needs of the local population.
THESE CHILDREN COME FROM A RURAL SETTING WITH LIMITED FACILITIES:
In this context, young children often accompany their parents for agricultural work, and in the case of girls, a significant portion of their early years is devoted to looking after their younger siblings. Due to minimal interaction with peers of the same age, these children face additional challenges when directly enrolling in the traditional grade 1 school system.
THE SOLUTION:
As we all know, elementary education plays a pivotal role in influencing both the generation and distribution of income, there is an increased necessity for expanding elementary education, especially in underdeveloped regions and among disadvantaged populations.
The Swasthya Swaraj Society is dedicated to empowering young tribal women with informal training, enabling them to offer preschool education to 1200 children between the ages of 3 and 6 in 80 tribal villages. This initiative, with strong community support, successfully engaged 24 tribal hamlets during a 6-month pilot phase.
The first six years of a child's life are pivotal, marked by rapid development in various aspects, including brain growth, physical development, and personality formation. At the age of 6, these children typically transition to formal schooling, which can be a significant adjustment for tribal children who have grown up with the freedom of open spaces, nature, and helping their parents with agricultural work.

I felt deeply saddened to witness children unable to begin their preschool education, especially with the limited resources available. I recognize the fundamental importance of early childhood education as a basic necessity

Swasthya Swaraj is a non-denominational, nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing healthcare within reach of the most impoverished and marginalized populations. The organization has established a pioneering community health initiative called the Swasthya Swaraj Comprehensive Community Health Programme in the tribal-centric Thuamul Rampur area of Odisha's Kalahandi district in India. Our vision is to foster a grassroots movement for "SWARAJ" in healthcare – a vision of a fair and impartial society, liberated from the burdens of sickness, lack of education, and poverty.
