Violence against women and children is a global pandemic. It is extremely difficult for women and children to stand up against the violence they are facing especially for those who are from the marginalised sections of our society.
Violence against women and girls has increased by 15.3% in 2021. In order to effectively address instances of violence, it is imperative that those affected receive appropriate legal support to pursue their rights and seek justice through the appropriate legal channels. They also need social support for raising their voice against injustices.

THE INITIATIVE :
I have partnered with Majlis Manch, an NGO based in Mumbai, to empower these women and girls by providing them with the necessary support to overcome the challenges and rise above, reclaiming their dignity and rights. I am committed towards creating a society that uplifts and empowers survivors on their path to healing and justice.

The Majlis Manch focuses on transforming victims into survivors. Majlis is a team of like-minded women lawyers and social workers who work for the protection and promotion of women's and children’s rights through legal representation, advocacy, and training. They provide social and legal support to women and children victims of sexual and domestic violence.
The team also creates awareness, policy interventions, public interest litigations, stakeholder accountability, research, and capacity building.

ABOUT ME
My name is Maya. I am a middle school student at The Shri Ram School, Moulsari. I want to draw attention to one of the widest social evils in our country today - Domestic abuse.
It's heartbreaking to know that 1 in 3 women are victims of domestic abuse, but only 1 in 10 report it. That's why I felt compelled to take action and do something to make a difference. Through my website and social media pages, I aim to educate people on this social evil. I bring out ways on how to spot a victim, signs of abuse, the different types of abuse, and the legalities associated with it. I also share inspiring stories of brave survivors to encourage victims to report.
30% of women have experienced intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence. That's 736 million women around the world. 25-30% of murders involve either partners or spouses. The sad truth is that even if the victim survives, they experience serious consequences - anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, inability to trust others, flashbacks, eating and sleeping disorders, and emotional detachment. Victims and survivors are at an increased risk of experiencing issues such as poor relationship stability, interpersonal violence, and sexual dysfunction. Health and behavioral impacts can also negatively affect intimate relationships.

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION
‘Majlis’ means association in several Asian countries. The name reflects our broad-based pluralistic and multicultural ideology. The founder members of Majlis were part of the women’s movement in Mumbai. The organization was registered as a Society and Public Trust in 1991. The Legal Centre of Majlis was founded by Adv. Flavia Agnes, a legal scholar on women’s rights, is a center for rights discourse and legal initiatives to address issues of women and children facing violence. Their vision is to provide access to justice to all women and children facing violence by providing legal support, advocacy, and training.
