THE PROBLEM AND BACKGROUND:
Kidney failure is a debilitating condition that affects millions of people in India. Normally, the kidneys filter the blood, remove harmful waste products and excess fluid and turn these into urine to be passed out of the body. When the kidneys fail to work it can be fatal.
When the kidneys fail there are 2 options for treatment :
- Dialysis: Patients go to a dialysis center where a machine mimics the work of a kidney and cleans their blood. It involves diverting blood to a machine to be cleaned. This takes 4 hours per session.
- Kidney Transplant: The other solution is an ORGAN TRANSPLANT. They need a donor for this and the Kidney is replaced with a new Kidney.

For those needing dialysis, this means
1)Visiting a dialysis center 3 times a week and spending 4 hours per session.
2) The cost of dialysis is INR 2500 - 3000 per session.
3) This works out to a cost of INR 4 to 5L per year.
This is impossible to afford for patients coming from economically backward homes. Unfortunately, there are thousands of people in and around Chennai who cannot afford dialysis and a transplant.
For those needing organ transplants, this means
- Finding a matching donor.
- Spending INR 7.5 to 15L to get this transplant done.

THE SOLUTION/ INITIATIVE:
The Bharathan Medical Foundation is an NGO in Chennai, that helps people who require organ transplants and also helps them with dialysis. They are partnering with
Hospitals in Chennai for Kidney Transplant surgeries.
The TANKER Foundation provides affordable dialysis.
Both these are to help children and adults from economically backward homes.
DIALYSIS: This is done at a subsidized rate of just INR 500 per session. They partner with the Tanker Foundation which has 11 dialysis centers in Chennai thus making it very convenient for patients.
FUND INR 5000 for example and you support 10 dialysis sessions.

ABOUT ME :
My name is Siddharth Yashwanth. I am 17 years-old and a Grade 12 student at Sishya, Adyar, Chennai.
The kidney is a critical organ. When both kidneys fail/stop functioning properly it will be fatal. The only treatment for those with this condition is either dialysis for life or a kidney transplant. Dialysis is one of the first technological innovations in medicine - and the only treatment that does not involve transplant, and yet allows patients with kidney failure to live healthy, and productive lives. Dialysis removes the waste products that accumulate in the blood because the failed kidneys are unable to excrete them.
Unfortunately, there are thousands of people in and around Chennai who do not have access to dialysis as it is too expensive for them.
This initiative of mine is to help these people. The cost of a single dialysis session is INR 2500-3000 in most private hospitals. The Bharathan Foundation has partnered with other institutions and is able to provide these dialysis sessions for just INR 500.
Each patient needs three sessions per week.
For example if you fund INR 5000 you will help support 10 dialysis sessions. Fund INR 20000 and support 40 dialysis sessions.

Bharathan Medical Foundation is a non-profit organization created with the aim of providing financial aid to people with life-threatening illnesses. Our priority is to assist children who are in urgent need of transplants or those who require life-saving medical procedures and are unable to fund their treatments themselves. We will also assist adults who are in need of dialysis etc.
