Water is the key to life. Millions of women in rural India walk many kilometres a day to get water from a distant water source like a river, lake or pond. They do this by carrying pots or vessels on their heads and make multiple trips. This takes up all their time, creates health issues (as it impacts the back, neck, etc) and leads to unnecessary stress.
We can together change that with a simple, low cost and amazing innovation called the Water Wheel.
The water wheel is a simple, low cost, high impact initiative that allows them to carry a large volume of water with minimal effort. This saves them time, energy and is a game-changer in rural areas. They can use the time saved for the betterment of their families. It also creates social change as men step forward and use the water wheel to get water.
Each water wheel has a capacity of 45 L and one trip in a day is enough for the needs of the entire household typically.
THE WATER WHEEL
Water wheels will be distributed in the rural areas of Maharashtra. One of the most important behavioural changes is that men are willing to help out with getting water ( if a water wheel is available). That is a dramatic change in behaviour at the grassroots and allows women to do other productive work.
My name is NIRALI SAI MACHAVARAPU. I am 13 years old and in Grade 9 at Oakridge International School, Gachibowli.
This is a campaign that will transform the lives of women in the rural areas of Karjat and Palghar in Maharashtra who are saddled with the inconvenient task of walking long distances to get water. The task is time-consuming and very burdensome. It causes back and neckaches. The women also spend hours to get the water and waste time - time that could be used to do something more productive and generate income elsewhere.
I was thrilled and surprised to learn about the Water Wheel. This is a simple and revolutionary innovation which is an easy-to-use efficient transport system that can hold up to 40L of water and provides the household with enough water for at least a day. The handles can be removed in seconds so that it is also used as a storage container. It's very durable and will last for years. It also brings about a massive behavioural change as many boys and men start using it to get water.
Please support my campaign and let us together bring joy to more women in Karjat and Palghar. The Water wheels will be distributed by the team from the Rotary Club of Hanging Gardens with their local partners. The cost of doing this (including identifying the women, the cost of the water wheel, and the actual distribution) is only INR 3000 per water wheel making it truly a revolutionary idea.
Let's together impact and change the lives of these women in rural areas of Maharashtra.
FEATURES AND SPECS
The water wheel is a cylindrical plastic container that can hold over 45 litres of water. The handles help people to roll it on the ground without the physical strain that occurs while carrying water pots on head, shoulders or waist.

How does crowdfunding work?
Crowdfunding in India is a relatively new concept and is growing very quickly.
It’s a concept that allows a large number of funders (like you) to fund an idea or a cause or event by giving small amounts of money online. Fueladream.com is a crowdfunding platform in India that allows for such pooling of funds. You can fund innovations and ideas on FuelADream and be the first to get these products or make them come true. You can also do a good turn by funding charities and causes through crowdfunding.
