THE BACKGROUND
All around the world, although tremendous progress is being made to close the gender gap in education, significant impediments to girls' education and empowerment remain, particularly for adolescent girls. In India, where prevailing patriarchal values still prevail, the birth of a girl is nevertheless a reason for sadness. India has a long way to go before every girl is able to complete secondary school. Fortunately, simple interventions, like the humble bicycle, which can promote accessibility to distant schools, and provide life skills education can increase school retention rates, improve learning outcomes, and reduce early marriages.
THE SOLUTION
The Rotary Club Of Bombay is on a mission to empower these young school-going girls, by giving them cycles and teaching them how to ride them. These cycles are specifically made for young girls in India who wear sarees & salwar. It is lightweight and the handle is low.

She says "My name is Asha. I do housework. My first bicycle was stolen. This bicycle was given to me by Firoza Madam through her organization. This bicycle is very useful for me. It saves me a lot of time. The first thing is that we housewives don't get time to exercise. Cycling makes me exercise. Going to the bus stop took me 15 mins but now because of the cycle, I reach in 5 min. I get to spend more time with my family now."
ABOUT ME
My name is Rtn. Rakesh Sharma. I am a 45-years-old and I am a member of the Rotary Club of Bombay.
I have undertaken this campaign because I think it's amazing that a cycle can completely transform the life of a woman. They are not only a low-cost and effective game-changer, but also give a big boost to the confidence of women and help them economically. The other unique factor is that many of these women who get a cycle are those who have never ridden one before. Teaching them cycling and then giving them a cycle will have a massive impact.
The cost of teaching them, giving them a cycle and monitoring the entire project is just INR 5000 per woman. This has an impact not just for a month or year but a lifetime. The cycles that are being given to them are ladies' cycles with a front basket which will make it convenient for them to use irrespective of what they are wearing.

ABOUT ROTARY CLUB OF BOMBAY
The Rotary Club of Bombay is one of the pioneers in India of the rotary movement, devoted to the ideal of Fellowship through service. It was founded on March 19, 1929. The Club meets every Tuesday at 1.15 p.m. at the Taj Mahal Hotel, the very place where the founders had their first get-together. The first president of the club was Rtn. Charles N. Moberley. Sir Phiroze Sethna, one of India’s most illustrious sons, was the only Indian among the other European founder members and the first Board consisted of only eight members. Most clubs in Dist 3140 can trace their roots to the Rotary Club of Bombay.
