Mr. Arthur Pereira was our football coach when we were in school and a man who has changed many of our lives. He taught us the sport, lessons on teamwork, life skills and even helped many of us get jobs.
He is now 70 years of age and going through a personal battle as he fights cancer. The family has exhausted their savings as costs have shot past INR 10L. They need our financial help and this campaign is to raise funds to help him recover.
The goal of this campaign is to raise INR 10L. However, we know that there will be more costs going forward and would request you to continue funding this campaign since they would actually need upwards of INR 15L.
He is currently on nasal feeding through a pipe as the radiation had caused severe blisters in his mouth. Cancer had ravaged his body and he has lost 12 kilos of weight in a short period of time and his movements have become restricted in the past two weeks.
With the permission of the PTA the St. Josephs School raised INR 3.41L as contribution for his treatment from staff and students. Moreover as a very special case the management also approved medical leave for 10 months and paid him a salary of Rs.30000/- per month amounting to INR 3L. Apart from this parents, teachers and ex-students have rendered their help financially.
In addition to the support and backing given by the school, staff, parents & ex students the family has expressed the need for more funds to aid his treatment and hence we decided to initiate the campaign.

The backdrop and the diagnosis of the lethal disease:
Mr. Arthur Pereira was a man who stood for good health and cheer and was known to be a man who was an epitome of fitness. Apart from all the laurels he earned for India in football, which has been elaborated earlier, he had been teaching sports, physical fitness, hockey, and cricket in St Joseph’s school in Malad from 1998 till a few years ago. He was asked to return, even after his retirement and continued to teach for 12 years until he was 70 years of age. His wife Philomena recounts that she never remembers him saying he was unwell or feeling low.
So it was very unusual when she got a call from the school saying that Arthur was complaining of unbearable pain in his right shoulder and feeling very unwell. He was rushed to the A.C. Pereira Bombay hospital and was there for 18 days.
He was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma which is the cancer of plasma cells. It causes cancerous cells to accumulate in the bone marrow. In his case, the lower waist was affected.
This man who had dedicated his life to health, sports, and fitness and inspired many young people to be sportsmen, is now fighting a battle with cancer.
Detailed below are the details of the hospitals, treatments, and costs incurred so far by the family.
Bombay Hospital and Medical Research Center at Marine Lines: Doctor- A.C.Pereira, 4.5L spent approximately on the initial diagnosis and treatment here.
M.O.C- Mumbai Onco Care Center and Manteshwar nursing home in Borivali: Doctor - Ashish Joshi – 24 rounds of chemo completed here and spent about 3 lakhs.
H.G.C Apex Care Center at Holy crossroad: Doctor - T.Basu and 11 rounds of radiation cost about 70,000 INR
Cost of medicines and other incidental costs
These Initial diagnosis and treatment have already cost INR 10L.
His family is in a tight spot financially. This has caused a severe drain on the family finances and all his provident fund and savings have been depleted as well. It's heartening to hear though that despite all that they are suffering physically and financially, Arthur and Philomena are hopeful that he will be restored to full health and keep a brave front and try to smile through it all.

We are raising 10 INR through this campaign. However, he may need to spend much more money on medicines, treatment, and other costs. So please continue to fund till the last day as we would like to raise over INR 15L for him ideally.
The more we collect the more breathing space he and his family will get financially. So please do continue funding even after the campaign goes past its goal.

A prolific & a passionate international footballer he was admired and hugely respected by the football fraternity.
