THE PROBLEM :

No electricity all through the day is a massive problem for millions of Indians living in rural India. Their life for half the day is in darkness ( 6 pm to 6 am usually) and there is a critical and urgent need to change that. This is a story about multiple villages in Karnataka that get electricity only for a few hours. These villages are located in the districts of Kodagu, Periyapatna and HD Kote.

Pic shows Belaku Foundation enquiring about the difficulties that villagers face due to lack of electricity.

Pictures show the rural districts of Karnataka where there is no electricity.

Electricity is a basic need for all of us, but there is an astounding number of villages in India where electricity is a distant dream. In the districts of Karnataka, called Kodagu, Periyapatna and HD Kote, several homes live in darkness after sunset.

Lifestyles are impacted as most work needs to be completed before sunset. Electricity for a few hours in the day means :

1) They need to finish critical work before 6 pm every day which is not productive.

2) They use kerosene lamps which are dangerous, toxic and expensive.

3) Education suffers due to the limited amount of time children get to study.

4)  It is relatively unsafe to step out of their homes after sunset.

5) They do not have the basic amenities and nobody has done anything to change that.

6) Digital devices - phones, TV's etc cannot be used here.

THE SOLUTION :

Setting up solar-powered lights for them, which can be used for lighting their home post 6 PM and can also be used for charging devices.

The solar-powered bulbs are also installed in the houses of these villagers which makes everything extremely convenient for them. This campaign is being done in partnership with the NGO - Belaku Foundation located in Bangalore, Karnataka.

The Solar Powered Bulbs are custom-built keeping in mind the needs of rural villagers. The villagers need a sturdy lighting system that is cost-effective. This bulb features a 3.7 volt solar light with an emergency mobile charging USB port. The benefits of using proper solar lighting bulbs are abundant for rural areas since they avoid costly trenching, save on energy bills, and improve safety.

IT COSTS JUST INR 8000 TO BRING LIGHT TO A HOME.

A Solar Kit costs just INR 8000 including the installation cost and overheads.

INR 16000 will bring light to 2 homes.
INR 24000 will bring light to 3 homes.

ABOUT ME

My name is Anaya Iyer. I am 15 years old and in Grade 9 at ABC School, Bangalore.

The people of Kodagu, Periyapatna and HD Kote do not have access to electricity which is a basic necessity and nobody has done anything to change that. They have to complete all their work before the sun sets which makes it extremely inconvenient. Life without electricity sounds torturous and unacceptable. Electricity is a basic need for all of us, but there is an astounding number of villages in India where electricity is a distant dream.

It costs only INR 8000 to light up one house. INR 16000 can help light up 2 houses.

Let us together impact the lives of people at Anupshahr. Please support my campaign as we can bring these homes out of the darkness.

ABOUT THE NGO

BELAKU FOUNDATION is a not-to-profit, non-governmental organization started in the month of October 2020, based out of Bangalore. Belaku Foundation as our tagline says- To Serve People…,

Belaku Foundation was born out of the desire of a group of friends who have come together to make a difference. It started with an intention of reaching out to needy people in Rural and Tribal villages, to work for their livelihood, health, education and other betterments.

We have been working on various projects to help the rural tribes/villages. We have worked on some projects in the past like grocery distribution, computers for govt schools, books and stationeries for kids in rural, solar lights for rural schools/tuition houses etc. We have made small yet very effective programs in rural areas. During such programs, we have observed that rural Karnataka is also affected very severely by the pandemic. Now with the reverse migration of people to villages, the situation is alarming. With limited resources, the struggle in rural areas is still greater. We wish to focus our efforts to help augment the bare resources in rural areas.

How does crowdfunding work?

Crowdfunding in India is a relatively new concept and is growing very quickly.

It’s a concept that allows a large number of funders (like you) to fund an idea or a cause or event by giving small amounts of money online. Fueladream.com is a crowdfunding platform in India that allows for such pooling of funds. You can fund innovations and ideas on FuelADream and be the first to get these products or make them come true. You can also do a good turn by funding charities and causes through crowdfunding. When you fund a charity it’s more like a donation and you get small innovative rewards like a shout-out on an FB page or a thank you email from the beneficiaries.

Updates have been committed to after the campaign ends.
