THE BACKGROUND

MORE THAN 8,00,000 COWS ARE SLAUGHTERED EACH DAY IN INDIA.

At cattle markets, these dairy cows, buffaloes and male calves are sold for slaughter. Often, not provided any food, water, or shelter. 

Up to 30 cattle are crammed into a truck that is barely sufficient to accommodate 6 cows. These animals are often mistreated by their handlers, prodded with sticks, injured, and dragged by their tails and ropes tied to their noses. Traffickers are also known to sprinkle chilly into the eyes of these harmless animals so that they don’t sprawl on the floor and die while being transported in crammed trucks. All of this cruelty even before they reach the slaughterhouse.

THE INITIATIVE

Mahagathe Foundation was established in Jan 2016 with the vision to “create a caring and compassionate environment, accepting the continuity of existence” for all sentient and insentient beings. Currently, Dakshineshwar Dham has a Gaushala that shelters 18 abandoned, rescued cows, saved from slaughterhouses and butchers. Most of them are old and infirm and don’t give any milk. Provisions of food and fodder for the cows are managed through volunteers in Nepal and India. We plan to provide food, shelter and care to atleast 108 rescued cows by the end of the year.

The funds generated through the campaign will be used towards procuring fodder that can provide basic nourishment to the abandoned cows and at the same time, also provide them with necessary medical care and shelter.  With an increasing number of cows being abandoned and going astray, Mahagathe foundation is seeing a growing need to raise funds to rescue and protect these sacred animals.

ABOUT ME

My name is PAVAN VALLURI. I am the secretary at Mahagathe Foundation.

This campaign of mine aims to help cover the food and maintenance expenses of abandoned cows. The cows have been saved from slaughterhouses and butchers. There are currently 18 cows and the number is rising rapidly. Our aim is to provide shelter to at least 108 rescued cows by end of the year.

During troubling times like the pandemic, it is important that we also look out for these animals as well. These cows need food and shelter just as much as we do, and I would like to do my bit to help these otherwise helpless creatures. They have been given a new lease on life after being rescued from slaughterhouses, and I would like to help improve their quality of life as well.
