VEENA'S STORY:
Veena and her brother were infants when they lost their father. With the challenge of running the household with two young kids, her mother took up multiple odd jobs. She worked long hours but managed to earn only Rs. 6000 a month. Due to the financial pressures, her brother took up menial jobs at an early age. Sadly, these efforts were still not enough to fund Veena’s education beyond the 10th standard.
It was in this background that Veena’s mother’s friend suggested Unnati as an option. Veena joined the 29th batch at Unnati and chose the retail vocation course. She recalls how every lesson taught at Unnati was extremely valuable. Just 50 days of training completely transformed her life. Veena was placed at KFC, at a salary of Rs. 7,000 per month.
Three years later at KFC, Veena not just loves her job, but has become one of their ace performers and IDP product champion! She is now a proud “manager” at KFC, earning a handsome Rs. 15,000 per month! Along with her, her family has moved to a higher socio-economic level.
"My mother gave birth to me but Unnati, gave me life" - Veena
Just one of the many stories where Unnati has been the turning point. See what our students have to say:
“Unnati is like a sculptor who creates art and we are proud to be the students who are its products.” – Nandeesh.
“Unnati is my second home and my second family and all my teachers are like my parents.” – GIRISH.
WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?
India will create 70 Million jobs as per the 12th five-year plan.
However, 48% of all jobs go unfulfilled due to the lack of a trained workforce.
By 2017, we will have 33.6 Million jobs available that nobody can fill.
At Unnati we look to bridge that gap.
And it’s not just an economic gap that’s being filled.
A generation goes above poverty line forever in just 50 days.

WHO WE ARE
Unnati, an initiative of SGBS Trust (1978), was started in Oct 2003 with the purpose of enabling underprivileged, unemployed youth to get employed. The program UNNATI was launched in 2003 and is now in its 11th year. The motto of Unnati, ‘Learn, Earn, Stand Tall’ is aimed not only to enable them to become ‘employable’ and engage in a productive job, but also to transform them into responsible citizens for our country. SUF currently runs centres across Tamil Nadu and is mandated to replicate UNNATI program across India on a day scholar module.
WHAT WE DO
Every youth is taught spoken English, Basic Computers, Life skills & Values apart from their core vocation. This is achieved through an intense 300-320 hours programme run from 8:30 to 6:00 pm including Sundays. At the end of this programme they are guaranteed a placement in corporates. For most of these youths, the placement by Unnati is their first corporate job. This closes the loop by empowering the youth to stand tall on their own feet.
Some of the companies where Unnati places their students:
Students from Unnati become ambassadors who help spread the message of change amongst their peers. The youth also undergo a 360 degree personality change & get to work towards improving the lives of people around them. We do not discriminate on the basis of gender, caste, creed or religion and try to inculcate these ideals in the people we train as well.
To date Unnati has trained over 10,000 underprivileged youths and placed them on stable jobs. Meaning that 10,000 families have found a way to rise above the poverty line – forever.
WHAT ARE WE RAISING MONEY FOR ?
We are now expanding rapidly across Tamil Nadu. Across our training centres in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Coimbatore, Thenkasi and Thiruverkardu, the training cost for 1000 youth is 7lakhs INR and this is where we need your help. Just 7000 INR will dramatically change the life of one of these students & their family.
The funds received would be utilized in the following areas:
