WE NEED HELP TO REVIVE A 4.5 ACRE LAKE LOCATED NEAR BANNERGHATTA, BANGALORE. READ THE STORY AND FUND MY CAMPAIGN GENEROUSLY.

We are five classmates who study in grade 8 at the Vidyashilp Academy and have taken up a project to revive a lake. Our team is called the Waveriders. This is also a part of WFUNA’s (World Federation of United Nations Association) Mission Possible program. The lake we have chosen is situated near Bannerghatta. This is a herculean task and we are happy that we are partnering with the Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar and getting advice and expertise from the lake revival expert Anand Malligavad.

THIS IS WHAT THE PLACE LOOKS AT PRESENT

The lake is currently overgrown with brush, grass, and soil and does not look anything like a lake. It needs a huge amount of work to revive.

WE AIM TO REVIVE THE LAKE IN 60 DAYS!

We are taking a small step in solving Bangalore’s water scarcity problem. We plan to filter the water, clean the lake and install various materials to make sure that our solution is sustainable. To assure sustainability, we have made sure that the below 5 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are covered.

To make our dream a reality, we need your help. Every rupee you contribute, small or big in amount, to this project, will bring our previous planet one big step closer to its former natural glory. Our target is raising 10 Lakhs for Phase 1, which is why we need your contributions! Phase one includes Cleaning, Desilting, Bund strengthening, Stone pitch, Plastic trap, Labour, Design & Drawings, Food water & miscellaneous.

IF WE RAISE MORE WE CAN FUND THE DESILTING OF A NEIGHBOURING LAKE TOO. THIS CAMPAIGN HAS 80G TAX BENEFITS AND WE WILL GIVE YOU FEEDBACK ON HOW THE FUNDS ARE USED AND THE IMPACT WE MAKE.

You can do much more than you think by just funding us, so much more. No step you take is small, so give back to your planet and thank it by helping us help you. Lake rejuvenation will not only benefit the flora and fauna, but also the people of Bangalore. These small stepping stones will lead to the result of the bigger picture, they will result in a better, brighter future for our planet.

It is said Bangalore was called the city of lakes with 260 lakes in and around Bangalore. With the growth of the city, the lakes started vanishing and now we are left with 80 polluted lakes. With the dying lakes, vanished the surrounding plant and animal ecosystem, the flora and fauna and most importantly, the water.  The city has tripled in size, the population has doubled with water available to only 60% of the population. This project is our little contribution to get one lake back into the city.

ABOUT ME & OUR TEAM:

My name is Mishti Kewalramani. I study in the 8th grade at the Vidyashilp Academy. A mere 5 months ago, 4 of my classmates and decided to join WFUNA’s (World Federation of the United Nations Association) Mission Possible program, where we took upon ourselves the initiative to revive a lake in Bangalore, Karnataka.

This lake is situated on the outskirts of the rural areas of Bannerghatta, where there is huge potential for migration of animals and agricultural development. By choosing this venture as our project, we will be including 5 of the Sustainable Development Goals mentioned above.

My aim is to raise INR 2,00,000 or more, and I hope to do that with the help of all of your generous donations. Change starts with you, so please contribute to my campaign, whether the amount is small or big. Give back to this glorious planet by helping us help you!

It takes up to 2 weeks after the campaign is closed for the monies to be transferred to NGO. The receipts will start getting processed about 4 to 6 weeks AFTER the campaign is closed and will be sent to you directly. The receipts will be sent by the Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar.

How does crowdfunding work?

Crowdfunding in India is a relatively new concept & is growing very quickly.

It’s a concept that allows a large number of funders (like you) to fund an idea or a cause or event by giving small amounts of money online. Fueladream.com is a crowdfunding platform in India that allows for such pooling of funds. You can fund innovations & ideas on FuelADream and be the first to get these products or make them come true. You can also do a good turn by funding charities and causes through crowdfunding. When you fund a charity it’s more like a donation & you get small innovative rewards like a shout-out on an FB page or a thank you email from the beneficiaries.

Updates have been committed to after the campaign ends.

Good afternoon and Happy New Years’ Eve! The work at the lake has been going great. Here are the things that have been done till now:

We have built around 4-5 small islands and 1 big island inside the lake. Mr. Anand Malligavad recommended we do this so that the islands break the big waves and no water is wasted. It also serves as a place for birds to perch. We have also planned to create a flat path for people and elephants, as well as other animals, to easily access the lake. We are already seeing a number of birds visiting the lake to drink the water, which indicated to us that the water is indeed quite clean!

We have also made the bunt, with clay as a firm base and soil on top, which signals goes around the edge of the lake. Beneath the bunt are two sloping steps that are there to break the waves and the fall of anyone who accidentally falls into the lake. We have built it so that the water there will only come up to the waist level of a person with average height.

We are also planning to insert a pipe, that starts at the lake’s catchment area and ends at the foot of the lake, that will direct rainwater right into the lake. It will be surrounded by bricks for support, so that water flowing at high pressure won’t break or move the pipe to cause leakages.

The holes in the bunt, courtesy of the stones in the soil covering it, were causing leakages and unwanted weed growth, due to some of the holes carrying wet mud. Therefore, we filled the holes with a mixture of biomass and cement, so that it stops the leakages and ensures that there is no more weed growth. We also scored the surface of the paste to make it rough, so that the whole bunt has the same texture.

During these few weeks, four inlets were also dug out. They start at the lake’s catchment area and then join together at the foot of the lake, so that all the waste material (like plastic) ends up in one place and is easier to clean.

We have also placed boulders at the end of the last slope, which will prevent people from slipping into the lake and falling. Moreover, most of the harmful plants around the lake have also been removed, crushed and buried under the soil bases for the Miyawaki and traditional forests.

We used the soil that was covering the lake to set a soil base for the Miyawaki and traditional forests, and they held and lot of nutrition and humus. The harmful plants, as mentioned above, were crushed and buried under this soil, so that they decay and act as more nutrition for the plants. We did this because the soil will not allow any sunlight to go in, which is why these harmful plants won’t grow back.

Even though the water in the lake is very muddy and opaque as of now, the soil will slowly settle down and sediment to create the sandy base of the lake, leaving clear water (through which you can see the base) behind!

When most lakes are revived, the soil covering them is removed, which increases the amount of space there is for the water to spread. As the water spreads, it becomes shallower and more prone to rapid evaporation, which is why many lakes dry up when undergoing the process of rejuvenation. However, as soon as we started moving the soil off the lake, groundwater from beneath started filling it up until the lake was around two feet deep, which is why it hasn’t dried up. Though this is quite unusual, it is also very lucky as, now, the lake already has water in it!

With your help, the process of reviving this lake is going extremely well. Thank you for contributing, I really appreciate it!
