THE CONTEXT
Self-defence training can increase a child’s confidence by up to 70% and significantly improve their ability to recognize and avoid danger. Girls who receive safety education are 3 times more likely to report unsafe situations. Early intervention programs like this can reduce vulnerability by 60–80% through awareness and skills.
So, I, along with the Rotary Club of Mumbai Versova, aiming to provide comprehensive self-defence and child protection training to every student for an entire year in Mumbai,
THE INITIATIVE:
The self-defence program is an initiative that aims to equip students from Mumbai’s government and municipal schools with practical self-defence skills, while educating them about child sexual abuse prevention, healthy boundaries, and body autonomy.
Starting with a focused pilot that will train 40–50 students in every school, we are creating a sustainable and scalable model that can be expanded to more schools across Mumbai. By combining physical training with awareness and confidence-building, we are not just teaching children how to protect themselves; we are helping them grow fearless, resilient, and ready to thrive.
Together, we can create safer communities where every child has the opportunity to learn, play, and dream without fear.

ABOUT ME:
My name is Aadya Sethi. I am 16-years old and a Grade 12 student at JBCN Intl School, Oshiwara.
I have undertaken this campaign because I was shocked to learn that many children studying in government schools in Mumbai are vulnerable to child sexual abuse and lack the basic skills and confidence to protect themselves.
In India, 1 in 2 children faces some form of sexual abuse, and most suffer in silence due to fear and lack of awareness. Without proper training, these children remain at high risk every single day, walking to school, playing outside, or even inside their own neighbourhoods.
Our program changes this reality. At just INR 12,000 per school, we provide a full year of professional self-defence training, child sexual abuse prevention education, healthy boundaries awareness, and body autonomy sessions to an entire batch of 40–50 students. This small investment equips children with practical skills to stay safe, the confidence to say “No”, and the courage to speak up. It improves their focus, self-esteem, and overall well-being, directly supporting better attendance and learning.
